Phoenix Summit: After Dark
The Tuning Fork
Endeavour Live and Phoenix Summit have teamed up to bring you After Dark; A showcase of the best musical talent from our backyard.
GINO OCTOBER
At 16, Gino October began producing and recording his own music, thanks to his brother’s early belief and investment in his talent. It was his brother who recognised Gino’s keen interest in rapping, buying his little brother a mic, computer and interface so he could begin making his own beats.
In 2016 Gino released his first EP, ‘Conflicted Conscience’, allowing him to begin honing his live performance craft at small venues throughout Auckland.
His 2018 EP ‘Expansion’ helped further cement Gino’s presence in the local scene, with a performance at Northern Bass the following year, and a feature on JessB’s ‘Work With’ track alongside Big Zeeks.
‘Look How Far We’ve Come’ is Gino’s retrospective offering, a journey that pays homage to where he comes from, exploring isolation and vulnerability, but is also a declaration that he’s sticking around to enjoy the ride. “I hope people enjoy listening to this project as much as I enjoyed making it.”
PARK RD
Park Rd are a surf-rock band from West Auckland, made up of 5 high-school pals. Their music is inspired by the world around them - surfing at west coast beaches, skating and spending time with friends and whanau. They're all about appreciating what's around them.
Off the back of releasing their debut EP (Sandcastles), Park Rd are heading into an exciting summer that will see them play throughout Aotearoa. Come sing and dance along with this must see band.
LAIIKA
Consisting of best friends Grace Moller and Heidi Simpson, LAIIKA are a female pop-duo from Auckland with an exciting modern take on pop music that recounts the whimsical feelings of youth with cutting truth. Since writing and performing their first song together at a dinner party as thirteen year olds, the now nineteen year old friends have been busy developing their unique sound and style, combining one another’s song writing and production skills over the past five years.
Sonically cohesive, yet eclectic, LAIIKA continue to write and co-produce all of their own songs, ranging from upbeat funkalicious dance tracks to stripped back intimate power ballads. Drawing inspiration from 70’s disco, dreamy 80’s synth pop and punchy 2000’s classics, think Avril Lavigne’s teenage angst meets the electro-pop power of The Veronicas with a touch of Taylor Swift’s folklore delicacy and you’ve got LAIIKA pinned. A duo who are more ready than ever to take on the world of pop, in their very own unique and significant way.
LEAPING TIGER
From Auckland, Leaping Tiger is the project of 21-year-old music producer and bass player, Jacob Park. Taking inspiration from a wide range of genres to create a unique hybrid of Electronic, Alternative, Hip-hop and R&B. Growing up in Tamaki Makaurau’s Eastern Bays in a half Zambian half European household lent to an early appreciation for world music. This later paired with a fascination of electronic music taking inspiration from producers such as James Blake, Flying Lotus, Arca and coming of age with internet culture to create the Leaping Tiger sound.
